UART Configuration

Kerrigan can associate a DevKit with a host serial device so operators can open a UART console from the device detail view. Use this when a DevKit has a USB serial adapter connected to the Kerrigan host.

Configure a Console

Open the device detail view and select the Console tab. Kerrigan lists supported USB serial ports detected on the host. If the expected adapter is not listed, refresh the port list after reconnecting the USB cable or checking host permissions.

Set the UART port to the host device path, for example:

/dev/ttyUSB0
/dev/ttyACM0
/dev/cu.usbserial-0001

Use 115200 baud unless the board image or bootloader requires a different rate. Select Test to verify that Kerrigan can open the serial device, then select Save UART to store the mapping for the DevKit.

Open the Console

After a UART mapping is saved, select Open from the Console tab. Kerrigan opens a live serial console session using the configured port and baud rate.

Only one console session should use a serial port at a time. If a port is busy, close any local terminal program such as screen, minicom, or picocom, then try again.

Host Access

Kerrigan containers need access to host serial devices. The Ubuntu host package starts Fleet Manager with /dev mounted and privileged access so USB serial adapters can be discovered and tested from the UI. It also starts the dashboard with /dev mounted and privileged access so saved UART consoles can be opened. During setup, Kerrigan adds the host operator account and the sima account when present to the dialout group. Existing login sessions may need to sign out and back in before direct host serial tools see the new group membership.
